Scott F. Burns Scholarship

Scott F. Burns is a Professor Emeritus of Geology at Portland State University and a nationally recognized leader in engineering geology. Over the course of his distinguished career, he has served as National President of the Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists (AEG) and President of the International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG). His contributions to the field have been widely recognized, including the Richard Jahns Award (2011), Oregon Scientist of the Year (2014), and the prestigious Karl Terzaghi Award (2015).
Beyond his professional achievements, Scott Burns has had a profound impact on the geologic community in the Pacific Northwest through his dedication to mentorship and connection. He has been instrumental in bringing students, early-career professionals, and experienced geologists together, strengthening the engineering geology community through collaboration and shared knowledge. Known for his enthusiasm and genuine care for others, Scottās passion for geology is contagious, inspiring generations of students and colleagues alike.

Scholarship Requirements
Applicants for the Scott F. Burns Scholarship must meet the following criteria:
- Be a current student or within the first five years of their professional career in geology or a related field
- Demonstrate how the requested funds will support professional development opportunities (e.g., field courses, conferences, workshops, or similar experiences) that may otherwise be financially inaccessible
- Complete the scholarship application form in full
- Submit a written response to the current yearās application prompt
